The decision comes, Walensky said, as cases, deaths and hospitalizations continue to decline nationwide, and in the wake of mounting “data and evidence” that shows the vaccines’ real-world efficacy, their ability to ward off COVID-19 variants and “our growing understanding of the low risk of transmission to others.” Those factors, combined with “universal access” to vaccines for people 12 years and older following the CDC’s endorsement yesterday of the Pfizer vaccine for children ages 12-15, led the CDC to update its guidance.

This move forecast the week prior by Health Secretary Dr. Tracie Collins signaled yet another inflection point in the pandemic’s trajectory as officials move from managing the vaccine-eager to addressing the vaccine-hesitant. As I write this, close to 700,000 New Mexicans have been fully vaccinated, with the state receiving national recognition mid-month as it passed the 50% mark for residents with at least one dose, “surging,” the New York Times wrote, “past states with far more resources in the race to achieve herd immunity against the coronavirus.”

COVID-19 by the numbers New Mexico health officials yesterday reported 222 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide total so far to 194,378. The health department has designated 175,600 of those cases as recovered. Bernalillo County had 75 new cases, followed by San Juan County with 25 and Socorro County with 21. Santa Fe County had 14 new cases, The state also announced eight additional deaths; there have now been 3,996 fatalities. As of yesterday, 114 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 11 more than yesterday. Currently, 53.7% of New Mexicans have had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 35.7 % are fully vaccinated. In Santa Fe County, 51.8% have had at least one dose and 32.5% are fully inoculated.
