The Public Prosecution Service says R-C-M-P officers were protecting themselves and civilians when they fatally shot an Indigenous man last summer.
Rodney Levi, from the Metepenagiag (met-EHH’-peh-nah-ghee-ah) First Nation, was shot and killed on June 12th after police responded to a complaint about a disturbance in a home in Sunny Corner.
The prosecution service says, while the decision does not diminish the tragedy of the event, a reviw by a Quebec police agency said it is obvious officers on the scene believed Levi was using force against them.
There’s no comment from the Levi family on this latest news other than they are considering their legal options. ....

Two more New Brunswickers have lost their lives to the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing the total number of COVID-related deaths to 16.
Public Health confirmed that an individual aged 70 to 79 in Zone 4 (Edmundston region), and an individual aged 70 to 79 in Zone 2 (Saint John region), died as a result of underlying complications including COVID-19.
The person in Zone 2 was a resident of Lily Court of Parkland Saint John’s Tucker Hall.
“On behalf of all New Brunswickers, I extend sincere condolences to the family and friends of these two people,” said Health Minister Dorothy Shephard.
“I offer my sincere sympathy to the families of the deceased, and I want them to know that all New Brunswickers grieve with them today,” said Dr. Jennifer Russell, chief medical officer of health. ....

Two COVID-Related Deaths In N.B.; 14 New Cases


The total number of COVID-related deaths is now at 16 in the province.

New Brunswick will move two zones back into orange as of midnight Tuesday; one more death reported


 
HALIFAX
New Brunswick Public Health is moving two health zones in the province back to the orange phase.
Dr. Jennifer Russell, New Brunswick s chief medical officer of health, said Zone 2 (Saint John region) and Zone 3 (Fredericton region) will have more relaxed restrictions as of midnight on Tuesday.
Russell said she recommended this move after seeing some hopeful signs.
We see the result of our efforts, Russell told a news conference in Fredericton on Monday.
Russell said public health took precautions and got ahead of the curve, hoping that they could quickly transition back to orange, and that s what they are doing. The two zones were only in the red phase for one week, she said. ....

New Brunswick COVID-19 Update
The five cases in Zone 1 (Moncton region) are as follows:
an individual 19 and under;
three people 20-29; and
an individual 20-29; and;
an individual 19 and under;
five people 30-39; and
two people 20-29;
two people 30-39;
All cases are self-isolating and under investigation.
The number of confirmed cases in New Brunswick is 717 and 577 have recovered. There have been nine deaths, and the number of active cases is 130. One patient is hospitalized and is in an intensive care unit. As of today, 157,265 tests have been conducted.
“The current situation is the worst we have seen so far during this pandemic,” said Dr. Jennifer Russell, chief medical officer of health. “We have managed to overcome all previous COVID-19 events through the co-operative efforts of staff, partner organizations and the general public. This experience guides us now. We must all do our part to meet the challenge facing us.” ....
