Actor and humanitarian Gary Sinise and his Foundation announce the launch of a cognitive health and mental wellness network providing transformative care to veterans and first responders experiencing post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injuries, and substance abuse: the Gary Sinise Foundation Avalon Network. The Gary Sinise Foundation Avalon Network builds on the work of the Marcus Institute for Brain Health and the Boulder Crest Foundation s Warrior PATHH program and will establish 20 treatment sites nationwide to serve thousands of veterans, first responders, and their families. ....

Virginia retreat helps veterans, first responders recover


During his service in the British Army, Capt. Brian Calder pulled numerous tours of duty as an explosive ordnance demolition specialist in Northern Ireland and the Middle East.
For years, Scottish-born Calder kept the tragedies he witnessed during those deployments close to his chest, steadily managing his innermost emotions.
“I was always able to control myself,” said Calder.
But in October 2018, Calder’s son, who just two weeks earlier had received his master’s degree in criminal forensic psychology, died in a tragic accident.
“It broke me, completely. It 100 percent broke me,” said Calder. “I was a broken man.”
Calder, a 23-year veteran, tried to put on a brave face for family and friends, but the loss of his son was too much for him to bear. ....

State Attorneys General Continue the Multistate Fight Against Veterans' Fundraising Fraud | Troutman Pepper

Since 2018, attorneys general in every state, D.C., and several U.S. territories have coordinated with the Federal Trade Commission and the National Association of State Charities Officials to combat veterans’ fundraising fraud. The joint initiative Operation Donate with Honor targets fraudulent charities that claim to use their donations to help America’s veterans and groups, but in actuality enrich the charities’ founders and professional fundraisers. Consequently, the joint initiative has resulted in over 100 enforcement actions.
As part of this larger joint effort with federal regulators, Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson led 11 state attorneys general earlier this month to reached a settlement with Florida-based nonprofit Healing Heroes Network and its former directors for allegedly misrepresenting that consumers’ donations would provide medical care for wounded veterans, when in fact litt ....

Healing Heroes falsely claimed 100 percent of their donations went towards helping wounded veterans when only 10-15 percent of donations went towards their intended purpose
SACRAMENTO - California Attorney General Xavier Becerra today joined a coalition of 11 attorneys general in securing a multistate settlement against a deceptive veteran charity, Healing Heroes Network, Inc. (Healing Heroes), and its former directors, Stacey Spiegel, Allan Spiegel and Neal Spiegel. The settlement resolves allegations that the former directors engaged in deceptive charitable solicitations, falsely claiming that 100 percent of the organization s donations went towards helping veterans. Healing Heroes and its former directors will pay $95,000 in restitution towards a legitimate tax-exempt ....
