Background Information
The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread to about 220 countries and territories with more than 141.7 million cases; and claimed the lives of over 3.025 million people globally according to WHO. In Africa, over 4.4 million cases have been reported in all countries, with about 118,000 deaths. There are also over 3.9 million recoveries in Africa.
Africa CDC continue to work with Member States to ensure an effective response to the outbreak by Member States, including maintaining key public health measures which have helped to minimize the rate of infections and deaths in Africa compare to other regions.
Dr Nkengasong will focus on the latest developments surrounding COVID-19 vaccines and the progress of vaccination rollout in AU member states. Background Information
The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread to about spread throughout the entire globe with more than 138.7 million cases; and claimed the lives of nearly 2.9 million people worldwide according to WHO. In Africa, over 3.9 million cases have been reported in all countries, with about 106,000 deaths.
Africa CDC under the leadership of Dr John Nkengasong, continue to work with Member States to ensure an effective response to the outbreak by Member States, including maintaining key public health measures which have helped to minimize the rate of infections and deaths in Africa compare to other regions.

Human Rights Watch has called on the government of Cameroon to investigate the January 10, 2021 killing of nine civilians in Mautu, a village in Muyuka Subdivision, South West Region.
Army soldiers killed at least nine civilians in Cameroon’s Anglophone South-West region, on January 10, 2021, Human Rights Watch said Thursday, February 4. “The dead included a woman and a child, and four civilians were injured. The soldiers also looted scores of homes and threatened residents.”
Human Rights Watch recalls that when news of the killings went viral, Cameroon’s army spokesperson admitted that soldiers from the 21st Motorized Infantry Battalion (Bataillon d Infanterie Motorisé or BIM) conducted an operation in the village, but did not acknowledge that troops killed and injured civilians. ....
