Ranindu set to meet Grand Master Oparin Grigoriy National chess champion Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage was schedule to leave for Russia for the FIDE Chess World Cup 2021 today. According to the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka, the Ananda College player has become the first Sri Lankan male player in history to participate in such an event. Sachini Ranasinghe participated in the Women’s World Cup in 2012. The top 206 players in the world participate in this championship which is played on a knockout basis. It is played during a period of one and half months to find the best in the world. All top chess players in the world including the current world champion Magnus Carlson have confirmed their participation. The event starts with the Opening Ceremony to be held on July 11, in Sochi, Russia and the first round will commence on July 12. ....
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has terminated the contract of one more franchise of the Lanka Premier League (LPL). The name of the team has not been revealed but Cricbuzz understands that it is the Jaffna franchise, owned by a group of investors of Indian and Sri Lankan origins from different parts of the world, including from Australia, Canada, France, United Kingdom, and the USA. The Jaffna franchise becomes the third team to have faced termination from the league following joint action by the SLC and league rights holders – Innovative Production Group FZE (IPG) of Dubai – against Colombo Kings and Dambulla Viiking late last month. All three teams have been dumped out of the league for what is being termed as reasons of non-compliance. ....

by Rex Clementine Sri Lanka’s Head Coach Mickey Arthur has brushed aside suggestions that fast bowler Lasith Malinga could make a comeback again ahead of the T-20 World Cup in India later this year. Although, there are some strict fitness guidelines that are in place to make national players fall in line, a clause that has been included in the players’ contracts says that exceptions could be made in certain cases. This clause has left a bad taste in many mouths. Sri Lanka’s senior players are up in arms refusing to sign contracts unless SLC removes the controversial clause. ....
