Bad Press: Freedom of the Press in Indian Country

Bad Press: Freedom of the Press in Indian Country According to an article by Indian Country Today, only five tribes (out of 574 federally recognized tribes) in the U.S. have passed laws protecting freedom of the press. One of those tribes, the Muscogee (Creek) Nation repealed its Free Press Act in 2018. Documentary filmmakers Rebecca Landsberry-Baker and Joe Peeler document the fight to restore the freedom of the press in their documentary Bad Press by following tribal journalist Angel Ellis, among others. The film, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival in 2023, explores the importance of an independent press as well as the danger of government corruption. The University of Idaho is hosting Landsberry-Baker and Peeler as keynote speakers for its annual Oppenheimer Ethics Symposium, along with a film screening and Q&A with the directors and Ellis.

The Emperor s New Groove

The Emperor's New Groove The Inland Northwest is lucky to still be graced with numerous historic, single-screen theaters that have been lovingly cared for and restored over the decades, like Spokane’s Garland Theater (which is set to reopen on March 1 under its new ownership and management group), but also Moscow’s Kenworthy, Sandpoint’s Panida, Ritzville’s Ritz, and many others. (In case you missed it, we explored the history of these and other theaters in the Jan. 11 edition of the Inlander). And in a convenient coincidence, Innovia Foundation is sponsoring a series of free family-friendly movies at these venues throughout February as part of the nonprofit’s 50th anniversary. The following showings are happening this weekend: The Emperor’s New Groove (Kenworthy, Feb. 24 at 2 pm), Migration (The Ritz, Feb. 23-24 at 7 pm, Feb. 25 at 3 pm), Cool Runnings (Panida, Feb. 25 at 2:30 pm).

Black History Month: Creating an Environment Where Black People Can Flourish and Thrive

Black History Month: Creating an Environment Where Black People Can Flourish and Thrive On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was murdered in Minneapolis. His death created a domino effect, spurring citizens across the United States to protest, educate themselves on the history of minorities and support Black-owned businesses in their respective communities. But the work didn’t stop after the protests ended, and almost four years later discussions are still being had on how to best support and appreciate Black communities. This open forum and discussion held at the Kenworthy theater features leadership of the Idaho Black Community Alliance, Trish J. Walker and Shari Baber. The two women will provide Moscow businesses and cultural leaders with strategies they can use to continue building bridges and foster a more inclusive and welcoming environment for the Black community.
