Gustaf, Pit

Gustaf, Pit There have already been a host of great albums released in 2024, but few of them stand out from the pack like Gustaf’s sophomore LP, Package Pt. 2. Singer Lydia Gammill instantly grabs listeners with snarling arch talk-sung vocals presented with a commanding shake-you-awake force. Throughout much of the record her vocals are mirrored and seemingly interact with deep, almost sinister vocal echoes that sound akin to a vocal filter to hide the voice of someone in witness protection. It creates an unsettling vibe that the rest of Gammill’s Brooklyn bandmates accentuate with twitchy, jittery no-fi instrumental accents of off-kilter guitar bursts and pulsating bass. A bit like if Kathleen Hanna fronted early era Talking Heads, Gustaf packs an art punk punch that eschews complacency and shouldn’t be missed. ....

Slothrust, Weekend Friends

Slothrust, Weekend Friends While Slothrust isn’t a household name, the alt-rock outfit centered around Leah Wellbaum (vocals, guitar) and Will Gorin (drums) has an tremendously high approval rating among other current cool bands. It’s easy to understand, as Wellbaum’s deep vocal timbre manages to seem simultaneously ferocious and detached, which pairs excellently with the dark grungy instrumentals that bare a hint of shoegaze. This formula is on full display on the band’s 2014 album Of Course You Do, which (for a 10th anniversary conceit) Slothrust will play in its entirety on its upcoming tour that stops at the District Bar. Slothrust also achieved a new milestone in late 2023, cracking the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts for the first time with a scintillating and heavy cover of Ginuwine’s “Pony” off the band’s new EP, I Promise. Regardless of your entry point, don’t miss a chance to take a ride with Slothrust. ....

Sugar: The Nu-Metal Party

Sugar: The Nu-Metal Party For those unaware, there’s been somewhat of a nü metal revival the past couple years. Essentially, many of the people who were kids during the late ’90s/early ’00s boom of rap-rock and dirty mainstream metal, but left the genre behind because it seemed embarrassing to enjoy as 20-somethings, have now returned to their angsty roots (also, a ton of Gen Z kids who were too young to enjoy it at the time revel in its anger-releasing qualities). Enter TSN Parties — the same organization that organizes The Taylor Party (a touring Taylor Swift DJ night) — to give nü metalheads their own DJ night in the form of Sugar: The Nu-Metal Party. While these nostalgia dance trips aren’t for everyone (see: me), if you’ve got a Limp Bizkit, Korn, Linkin Park or Staind shirt buried in your dresser collecting dust, now’s the time to bust it out. ....
