Alamance reports 16,673 sick, 237 dead in COVID-19 battle


New COVID-19 case counts leveled off last week in Alamance County, while vaccinations continue to increase and the percentage of positive COVID tests trend down.
As of Monday, the county reported 16,673 total cases and 237 deaths since the start of the outbreak.
The rolling weekly average of new cases per day as of Monday was 47, down slightly from 49 last Monday. The highest single-day case count in the last week was 71 reported on Feb. 25.
Statewide, 862,170 overall cases had been confirmed as of Monday and 11,254 had died. Additionally, 1,319 people were hospitalized Monday for COVID-19 care.
Of the total confirmed cases in Alamance, 16,038 people have recovered and been released from isolation. As of Monday, 398 remained active cases and nine people were hospitalized, according to the Alamance County Health Department. ....

COVID-19 clusters identified at 5 childcare locations in Alamance County
The Alamance County Health Department has identified COVID-19 clusters at three childcare facilities spanning five different locations. 
Hawfields Presbyterian Child Care and Development Center in Mebane, Like My Own Daycare No. 2 in Burlington and Kidz N Progress Childcare all have clusters. The Kidz N Progress Childcare clusters include three different locations: one in Mebane and two in Haw River. 
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services defines a cluster as a minimum of five confirmed cases within a 14-day period with plausible links between the cases. 
Hawfields Presbyterian Child Care has nine confirmed cases among six staff members and three children.  ....

COVID-19 Variant Appears In Buncombe County
(Buncombe County, NC) A more contagious strain of COVID-19 is showing up in Buncombe County. The health department revealed yesterday three cases of the U.K. strain have been identified through random sequencing testing by the CDC. There have been over 20 such cases in North Carolina. Health director Stacie Saunders said the news wasn t unexpected.
State Senate Passes Bill Requiring Schools To Open
(Raleigh, NC) A bill to require schools to reopen in North Carolina is heading to the state House. The Senate passed a proposal yesterday which instructs school systems to open under a choice of minimal or moderate social distancing for all grades. Governor Roy Cooper has already recommended that schools reopen their classrooms. Students are allowed to remain in remote learning if they wish, according to the bill. ....

Former Mebane and Alamance County manager worked 30 years on growth


Over his more than 30-year career, Cheek was part of a rotating cast of local leaders weaning the local economy off textiles by recruiting companies in other industries and making room for them.
