HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Everyone has their own story on where they were when COVID first shut down the world.
Airline industry veteran Cam Simon started thinking about his next endeavor while on a layover in Japan.
“I was kind of worried about what was going to happen,” said Simon, who’s been a flight attendant for more than eight years.
“Global shutdowns don’t happen all the time. I was in the supermarket in Japan and I just kind of looked around the whole area and was in the curry section and said you know what, if worse comes to worst, I’ll just make curry and sell it.” ....

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Mari’s Gardens, an 18-acre-farm in Mililani operated by the Lau Family, has long been a chief supplier of produce to Hawaii’s restaurants, hotels, and cruise ships.
All those industries were virtually shut down in March 2020 by the coronavirus pandemic.
“When they actually shut down restaurants, they shut down hotels also basically and so, the phone calls were coming in all day,” said Fred Lau, who started Mari’s Gardens in 2001. ....

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Established decades ago by Parker Ranch heir Richard Smart, Waimea town’s Kahilu Theatre is a home for great performances for a Hawaii audience.
“He had a dream to bring world music and the arts to Waimea and so he built this Broadway style theater 40 years ago for the good of the community,” said theater artistic director Chuck Gessert. ....

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - For Ryan Katsuno, a love of malasadas ― and for Kailua ― drove him to save Agnes’ Portuguese Bake Shop, a windward Oahu institution for nearly half a century.
When he heard Non Demello planned to close the store in early 2018, he threw out an idea.
“Literally the day after he shut down his bakery, I was at his store knocking on his door and saying, ‘hey this might be an opportunity for me to keep Agnes’ alive,’” Katsuno said. ....
