Taihape residents will need to conserve water for at least 48 hours, after recent high rainfall increased the amount of solid matter particles in the local water source. A Rangitīkei District Council public notice issued on Wednesday said Hautapu River s turbidity was changing too frequently for Taihape’s water treatment plant to meet daily demand. The notice said the council expected improvements over the next two days, and would update their website tomorrow if water usage could return to normal. ....

Swimmers could be putting themselves at risk of bacterial infections at more than a third of the wider Manawatū’s waterways this summer. From November to the end of April the Horizons Regional Council tests 70 lakes and rivers, and 11 coastal beaches in the Manawatū-Whanganui region for E.Coli, Cyanobacteria and Enterococci as part of its annual monitoring programme.
