UN Human Rights Office condemns executions in Iran

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights today strongly condemned a series of executions in Iran since mid-December 2020. Those killed include people from minority groups in the country.
In a Twitter post, the UN body said that at least 28 people have been executed since mid-December. We urge the authorities [in Iran] to halt the imminent execution of Javid Dehghan, to review his and other death penalty cases in line with human rights law, it added.

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) condemned Thursday Iranian officials’ fourth execution of a child offender in 2020, stating that the execution of child offenders is “categorically prohibited under international law.”
Mohammad Hassan Rezaiee was executed early Thursday morning for an offence allegedly committed by him at the age of 16. This was Iran’s fourth confirmed execution of a juvenile offender in 2020, while at least 80 others are believed to be on death row.
Iran is a party to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Article 37 of the UNCRC prohibits capital punishment for offences committed by persons below the age of 18. The OHCHR said that the country’s recent spate of executions is, therefore, a marked breach of its international obligations, hinging only upon the reservation it made when ratifying the UNCRC that “if the text of the Convention is or becomes incompatible with the domest

Dec. 31 (UPI) The United Nations Human Rights Office condemned the execution of an Iranian man Thursday for a crime allegedly committed when he was 16 years old.
Mohammad Hassan Rezaiee was executed in Iran in the early morning even though execution of child offenders is strictly prohibited under international law. The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani said the execution was the fourth confirmed for a child offender.

 There are deeply troubling allegations that forced confessions extracted through torture were used in the conviction of Mr. Rezaiee, and there are numerous other serious concerns about violations of his fair trial rights, the statement said.

Rezaiee, who spent 12 years behind bars before his execution was eventually carried out, is the fourth person Tehran has executed this year for crimes committed as a minor. The UN said 80 more child offenders remain on death row.
