Purchased at auction in 2016 for $57,400, by Westchester restaurateurs Michael Kaphan and Edward Taylor the McKean, which ferried people to safety and pumped water to the smoldering World Trade Center on 9/11, has had a peripatetic five years.

The John D. McKean was an FDNY fire boat from 1955 until 2010. It was sold at auction and then restored so it can go on display as a floating museum.
NEW YORK - A fireboat that took part in some of New York City s most high-profile response and rescue efforts is about to open to the public as a floating testament to history.
The John D. McKean, named for Marine Engineer John D. McKean, who was burned in a gas explosion on another fireboat, went into service in 1955. In 2001, it played a major role in the response to the Sept. 11 attacks. ....
