CSPAN3 Book Discussion On Backstage At The Lincoln Assassination February 16, 2015

Background, the context is the theater. This was an act that occurred in a theater, by an actor, with other actors standing by. And i wanted to look at it through the eyes of those people. And when i was working on the president s book and i was working on the lincoln chapters, i kept coming across this iconic playbill for our american cousin. I looked at it and i kept thinking, these are real people most of whose names have been lost. I mean, if you asked people on the street who the people were involved with the lincoln assassination, certainly people know lincoln, they know booth, maybe 1 in 10,000 would know laura keene. But almost no one would know the names john dyott, harry hawk, billy withers. These were major names in the events of that night. So i started looking even closer to get a sense of, who were these people . I began to find in some cases their names were spelled wrong or the names were a misrepresentation. In some cases its really difficult tracking down actors, beca ....

CSPAN3 Book Discussion On Backstage At The Lincoln Assassination February 17, 2015

Back and forth several times before he actually went up to the box upstairs. So i wanted the readers to feel like, what must they have gone through. Imagine for a moment that the president of the United States has been assassinated in your workplace by one of your most admired, respected colleagues. Fearing for your own safety and the fear of being thought complicit. Reelecting in panic that could be construed as hostile to the president. As well as the times you could be seen socializing with the suspect. The more i start theres a saloon on the south side of fords theater. The star saloon. Theres a saloon next door on the north side, the green back saloon. There were a lot of trips to those saloons that day. Near as i can figure booth alone made seven or eight trips over there in the afternoon or evening which gives you some feeling about working up his courage for what he did. From that moment on, your world would never be the sa ....

CSPAN3 Lectures In History March 22, 2015

Bel air, maryland. He went to a school in sparks, maryland, run by quaker elder and a military middle and high school in catonsville, maryland run by an episcopalian priest. These are good schools. It was difficult for him. His sister said his older brothers were more intuitive but for john, he had to really force himself to learn things. It was not easy. I see all sorts of clues that he was a good auditory learner. He would listen, especially to people he respected. We know this. You can pay attention. You can learn a lot with your ears. People have made a fortune with their ears. He was very good about picking up things just by listening other people. He became an actor in his late teens. He was in richmond for two years and was popular there. I was able to discover that the roles he played more than any other role was lord gundry in our american cousin. It was not known what role he had until recently and i was glad to see that in a source. He knew that play backward and forward. Wh ....

CSPAN3 Life Of John Wilkes Booth April 2, 2015

Made far from it. Fell dead Holding Without affect on the audience. But given the time to make deeds of his words it might have been one of more far reaching. Tragically he was not to be granted that time. As has been noted there was one in the audience that night who would use lincolns words as the catalyst for one of most heinous and destructive acts in our nations history. From childhood we are taught to know John Wilkes Booth is to hate him. Hes demonized as the embodiment of evil and yet few of us really know very much about him other than the fact that he was a handsome and popular member of the nations leading thespian family until he jumped the track. His own brother described him as a good hearted harmless though wild brained boy. What has been wanting in the pantheon of lincoln scholarship is a highly readable biography of booth until now. After spending a quart ....
