Black Americans are being hospitalized and dying from COVID-19 at higher rates than white Americans, says bioethicist Esther Jones.
Still, many Black people are skeptical about receiving the vaccine due to distrust of the American medical system.
Jones says healthcare workers and policymakers can help close racial health gap by understanding the source of this skepticism.
Black Americans have been the least inclined of any racial or ethnic group to say they d get vaccinated against the coronavirus. The proportion of Black people who said they ll probably or definitely take the shot has risen over time but even by mid-January, with two COVID-19 vaccines authorized foremergency use in the US, only 35% of Black survey respondents said they d get it as soon as they could, or already had gotten the shot. ....

Health Care Conference Addresses the Legacy of Racism in Black Health | News

Activists and scholars across a breadth of disciplines gathered virtually for the fifth annual student-run Black Health Matters conference this weekend to discuss the effects of systemic racism on Black health.
The Harvard Undergraduate Black Health Advocates organized the two-day event, which featured a series of keynote addresses, panels, and workshops guided by speakers affiliated with Harvard and organizations around the country.
Abigail Joseph ’21, who served as conference co-president alongside Akosua F. O. Adubofour ’21, said the purpose of the conference was to look at Black health issues through an intersectional lens.
“It felt reductive to always talk about Black people as a monolith, so I wanted our conference to kind of dig into more of those differences and to tease them out health-wise,” she said. ....

Each year in February, the United States honors Black History Month to celebrate the achievements of Black/African American individuals, recognizing the central role of the Black/African American community in America’s history and highlighting the importance of racial justice, diversity and inclusion, and equity.
“One of the principles of Black History Month is that it is a key part of America’s identity,” said Selwyn M. Vickers, M.D., FACS, dean of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine. “One of our struggles in this country is painting America as monochromatic or monolithic; that’s not who we were at our best, and it’s clearly not who we’re going to be in our future. Black History Month is a uniquely different time of reflection because of how African Americans got here. That struggle has continually defined our story and identity, and is a part of who we are as we move forward.” ....
