When Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous address on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, he memorably said, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’” That creed enumerated in the Declaration of Independence was more than just a statement of beliefs it was a promise to the people of the United States of America. And it’s taken an awfully long time to fulfill that promise. Racism has had a stranglehold on this country from colonial times. It’s woven into the very fabric of the republic. It’s been so violent and pervasive that it’s been the reason for lynchings, beatings and murder. It was even the catalyst of America’s bloodiest war. ....
