As Bob Brashear reflected on his 40-year career as a pharmacist, he recalled learning early on that a pharmacist’s role is so much more than simply filling prescription bottles with pills.
“I remember when I was working as an intern, filling a prescription for a diuretic for a lady. I remembered that she was also on lithium, and I remembered from pharmacy school that there was an interaction between lithium and diuretics,” he said.
The woman was in the hospital, and Brashear called and asked how she was doing.

“They said she was doing fine, ‘but now she’s comatose,’ and I told them about the interaction between diuretics and lithium and to call the doctor and have him check her and get her off the diuretics,” he said. ....
