ROCKFORD Dan Nicholas is being remembered by family and friends for his passion for flowers and exotic plants and for his vision of beautifying the community where he was born and raised.
He was a devoted husband and father, a U.S. Army veteran, a successful financial services executive and a political advisor.
Nicholas, who along with brothers Ab and Bill, donated funds to build the Nicholas Conservatory, died Monday at age 93.
“They grew up as boys walking across the river on the ice and skating on the old lagoon,” Nicholas’ oldest child, Scott, said of his father and uncles. “They thought the conservatory would be a great memorial to our grandparents, William and Ruby. It was an extension of what mom and dad loved with their gardening.”
I still remember the first time I saw this house from across the river. To me, it looked a bit like it was made of legos. That blue really caught my eye. Now, take a look inside.
For more than twenty years, the blue roof of this home catches eyes as we head south on Highway 251, or coming across the Auburn Street bridge. This Harlem Boulevard home with that iconic blue roof, on the banks of the Rock River, is on the market.
Would you believe the home was built in 1924, it was. This nearly 4,000 square foot home has been updated to the point you can t tell that it was built nearly one hundred years ago.
