Incident-free polling in rural constituencies of Ernakulam

Church feud a crucial factor in Kothamangalam, Muvattupuzha, and Perumbavoor Polling went off peacefully in the three largely rural constituencies of Ernakulam Muvattupuzha, Kothamangalam, and Perumbavoor with the segments recording 73.31%, 76.54% and 76.04% votes respectively, as on 7.10 p.m. on Tuesday. Interestingly, 74.48% voters from Penganchuvadu tribal colony in Perumbavoor exercised their franchise even before 5 p.m. It was 80.39% at Thalumkandam booth in Kothamangalam, yet another remote forest locale in Ernakulam. There were average or below-average queues in most booths in the three constituencies, where the popularity of the candidates of the corporate-backed Twenty20 has been giving sleepless nights to the three traditional fronts.

Vijayan, former chairman of the Kerala State Biodiversity Board, wants the next government to strictly follow a green path when it comes to development. Its high time that the State adopted a sustainable development pattern. Green alternatives should be explored in all sectors.

City govt. hospital's annexe to be opened today

The new annexe of the Government Hospital for Women and Children at Kottaparamba in Kozhikode.   The new annexe building attached to the Government Hospital for Women and Children at Kottaparamba in the city will be opened on Friday. According to M. Sujatha, Superintendent of the hospital, the facility will have 10 labour suites with space for companions, post-delivery wards, special newborn care units, and a patient dining area. The newborn care units would be helpful for those with breathing difficulty and underweight children. The patient dining area will be for patients and their husbands or female companions. There is a passage to the new block from the old block, she added.

Hosdurg district jail gets green tag Updated: Updated: Water conservation and organic farming practices win special praise Share Article Water conservation and organic farming practices win special praise The Hosdurg district jail has been declared ‘Haritha jail’ (green jail) in recognition of a series of activities undertaken by it under the Haritha Kerala Mission (HKM). Making the announcement, Revenue Minister E. Chandrasekharan lauded the jail for its exemplary service as part of the HKM’s sanitation, water conservation and organic farming practices. HKM district coordinator M.P. Subramanian said the jail had been doing a commendable job in line with the green protocol. It included cultivating a variety of vegetables such as brinjal, ladyfinger, spinach, tomato, cabbage, and cauliflower and fruits on the jail premises. Most of them are cultivated using grow bag owing to space constraints.
