New Delhi: A seer has died from coronavirus and 80 other holy men have tested positive after attending a vast Indian religious festival where millions of pilgrims have been ignoring Covid-19 advice despite a national surge in infections.

New Delhi: Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an appeal l to keep Haridwar Kumbh Mela “symbolic” amid surging COVID-19 cases in the country, the chief of Juna Akhara, Swami Avdheshanand Giri called off the ongoing Kumbh Mela in Haridwar.

For the first time ever, 1,553 Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) volunteers have been appointed as Special Police Officers (SPOs) by Uttarakhand Police for this yearâs Kumbh Mela.
While 1,053 RSS volunteers are working in the field, the rest are back-up strength. The police have also issued them identity cards, a cap and a jacket.
RSS is among many social organisations, including Congress Seva Dal, which were roped in as SPOs for this yearâs Kumbh, reports ....

Amid ongoing Haridwar Kumbh, the holy city of Uttarakhand has reported more than 1,000 COVID-19 cases over the past 48 hours. This comes after a massive crowd of devotees were seen taking dips into the holy Ganges at the Mahakumbh festival.
At the Haridwar Kumbh Mela on Monday, as nearly 31 lakh people thronged to the Kumbh Mela for a holy dip in river Ganga at Haridwar s Har Ki Pauri, COVID-19 protocols went for a toss as devotees were seen without masks or maintaining any social distancing. ....
