The least to degrade it significantly if not destroyed it. that is one of the concerns that we have. it will reconstitute itself but they lost 10,000 fighters and we were able to operate tragically lost six or seven special forces operators and that is a great loss to their families and to the country. but compared to the suffering of the kurds, it is quite a difference. and we re also worried now about whether the kurds could maintain those prisons in which isis, hard-core isis and some international fighters are held. whether they will abandon those positions to defend their villages as the turks move down. i know sort of the department of defense is trying to back-fill after the president announced dramatically but i think also very foolishly that we re pulling all of our forces out and they re now trying to back-fill with several hundred troops to go in there but it is ....
I know american and kurdish forces were fighting to contain isis. the kurds have been given if not all, most of the credit for containing and basically all but doing away with the caliphate there in syria. what happens when the turkish settlements arise? so, here s where it gets more interesting. more disturbing. isis is not a black and white thing. there are the isis members who are in the camps. these were ones who were caught on the battlefield at the end of the campaign. there are also many people who changed sides, who were with isis. then they decided to join one of the other numerous syrian factions. some of those people ended up in in turkey and some of those people are the ones who are attacking alongside the turkish military. so, if you ask the occurreds, they say we are being attacked by isis. or by people who were isis who are now trying to come back and ....
Clear out terrorists. this is a displacement campaign. turkey is moving in because the kurds, with the american protection, have set up this autonomous zone where i am right now. turkey does not want this autonomous zone to exist. and turkey is not just invading, it is bringing in people, militias fighting alongside turkish groups who plan to stay afterwards. turkey is rolling out and describing all over turkish media. the new settlement plans. how many new housing units are going to be built in this area. and the people being brought in are arabs, they re not kurds. and in many cases they were the neighbors of the kurds they are fighting. this is going to get very ugly. and the kurds say that president trump opened the door for a displacement campaign of ethnic cleansing. and the american troops on their bases are now in a position where they have to watch it. what s going to happen with the isis fighters, richard? ....
Settle here and reinvent themselves as the liberators of this land. the people who are in the camps, the hardcore isis fighters who stuck with the group until the end, well, they re still in the camps. there are two main camps and several other ones. they re guarded by the kurds. not guarded by the u.s. forces. as the kurds rush off or lead to protect their families, those camps are not as well guarded so obviously, there s a concern that there could be prison breaks. and the isis leader in hiding, aabu bakr al baghdadi those leaders have broken out and called on other supporters to go and free their isis brethren from these camps. and now would be the time to do it. jeremy, the troops, the military leaders, they don t always agree with any decisions of any given administration. they re not always on the same page. is this different? ....
Against isis told fox news, i am ashamed for the first time in my career. yesterday, president trump stood by his decision to withdraw u.s. troops. i feel that we are doing the right thing, and i think the country feels that, too. we ve had tremendous support out of the washington little washington area, even in washington, people are saying you re doing the right thing. has to be done, otherwise, you re never going to do it. joining me from northern syria, nbc news chief correspondent richard engel and veterans of america jeremy butler. jich a richard, i want to start with you on the ground. you ve been talking to troops out there, one told fox news that they are ashamed. what are you hearing? reporter: we re hearing similar sentiments. frankly, most of the world does not think that the u.s. is doing the right thing. most of the world is saying that the u.s. has betrayed a close ally, if you are these troops, ....
