PROVIDENCE – Most college professors and instructors consider themselves teachers. But in prioritization for the COVID-19 vaccine, in Rhode Island as in other states in southern New England, they haven’t been emphasized the same way.
Rhode Island’s push to vaccinate teachers with at least one shot by the end of March included only early childhood and K-12 teachers, not people working in higher education.
Some question why. On Twitter and other social media outlets, college professors noted that they, too, are working in classrooms with students. ....

Unemployment claims continue decline

PROVIDENCE – The number of individuals collecting continuing unemployment benefits in Rhode Island declined by 1,906 week to week to 76,112, the R.I. Department of Labor and Training said Tuesday. 
Of the total number of individuals collecting benefits last week, 35,847 were in the pandemic unemployment assistance program. The federally created and backed program covers those typically ineligible for unemployment benefits, including gig workers, contractors and small-business owners.
PUA filings totaled 2,909, a decline from 3,737 one week prior.
COVID-19-specific unemployment filings for the week totaled 3,986, a decline from 4,057 one week prior. To date, COVID-19 unemployment insurance filings in the state total 410,078. ....
