Even back in the seventies BMW was battling the idea its bikes were just for old men. So in 1977 it signed up professional stylist Hans Muth to create the ultimate sports tourer. The result was the R100RS.
The fact that the R100RS remains one of the most practical long-distance mounts to this day is testament to the brilliance of Muth’s wind-tunnel-designed, nine-piece, frame-mounted fairing that transforms the underpowered boxer engine and conservative chassis into a serious touring package.
The top speed of around 125mph was impressive, but it’s the ability of the R100RS to maintain a 100mph cruising speed for hours on end that makes it a true classic.
Although expensive when new, prices of the R100RS – and of its first cousin, the 1979-on RT – have stabilised and a riding experience that was once the preserve of the well-heeled can be yours for between £2000-£3000.

Restoring my 1974 BMW R90S 900cc Motorcycle I bought the bike in 1984 at the height of the financial crisis. The guy was desperate to get rid of it. I offered him 1400 euros but he wanted 3000. I started to drive away and he bicycled after me and begged me to take the bike. Those days they threw cars and motorcycles at you and the market was flooded. The bike became mine for 1400 euros. This is the first run. The bike was run down but started easily and sounded nice. He told me that he had repaired the gearbox. He did not know what bike he was selling. Rainy days In 1969 Hans Muth was a designer at Ford, who were based in the Rhineland, and while he enjoyed the job the weather was rubbish. All of his friends told him he should move to Bavaria for the mountains and it helped that the local car company was on the up and up. Before long Muth upped sticks to Munich and found himself as the Head of Interior Design for BMW’s car division. As a treat, he bought a cottage high up in the mountains and so he could get there, he bought one of those new-fangled 4x4 things (don’t worry – this will make sense later). Soon after though, his attention switched back to two wheels. ....
