ANALYSIS: #EndSARS: How Lagos Judicial Panel has fared in six months
A total number of 235 petitions were received by the panel between October to December 2020.
On October 19, 2020, the Lagos state government set up a nine-man
Judicial Panel of Inquiry to investigate cases of brutality and human rights violations perpetrated by operatives of the Nigerian Police Force and the dissolved Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
The panel was set up as a response to one of the demands of youth during the #EndSARS protests, which is investigating cases of police brutality and providing restitution to the victims.
While inaugurating the panel, the Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said it was “in line with the resolution of the National Economic Council on October 15, 2020, chaired by the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo.” ....

The Judicial Panels of Inquiry set up across Nigeria to investigate the excesses of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies have continued sittings in the FCT and these 12 states in the week under review – Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Benue, Ekiti, Imo, Kaduna, Lagos, Ondo, Osun, Oyo and Plateau.
In the FCT and 18 states, the Judicial Panels of Inquiry have closed submission of petitions and Panels in Adamawa, Niger, Katsina, Kwara and Rivers States have concluded sittings/hearings and their recommendations are to be submitted to the government for implementation.
The ongoing Judicial Panels of Inquiry provide an opportunity for the Nigerian government at the federal and state levels to meet major yearnings of Nigerians, which is justice for all victims and survivors of police brutality and implementation of the eventual recommendations of the Judicial Panels. ....

The Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry, on Friday, gave a cheque of N10m each to two petitioners who fell victim of stray bullets fired by men of the disbanded police Special Anti-Robbery Squad.
One of the compensated victims was a 35-year-old hairdresser, Mrs Hannah Olugbodi, who told the retired Justice Doris Okuwobi-led panel that she ended up on a crutch after her left leg was shattered by a stray bullet fired by SARS cops who were attempting to arrest a young man with tattoos in June 2018 in the Ijeshatedo area of Lagos.
Olugbodi, who presented her case before the panel on November 28, 2020, told the panel that she had been rendered incapacitated since the incident happened and pleaded with the panel to help her get justice. ....
