UAE archaeologists urge visitors to respect heritage sites after rock vandalism


Archaeologists urged the public to respect valued heritage sites by not defacing them with graffiti or carvings.
The warning came after recent acts of vandalism were discovered by volunteers at the Fossil Dunes site in Al Wathba, Abu Dhabi.
Carved letters and splashes of graffiti were found by volunteers attending a clean-up event at the site over the weekend.
The site, in the Abu Dhabi desert, consists of a series of ancient rock formations that were created over a period of thousands of years after sand swept by the wind mixed with calcium carbonate, causing it to harden and form natural sculptures. ....

War in Syria: Newlyweds fled Aleppo for Abu Dhabi after home was hit by air strike

Abdullah Nasser, 30, vividly remembers the day when an air strike reduced his family home in Aleppo to rubble.
In the summer of 2014, the journalist and his family went to spend the night at his sister’s home.
“I was on vacation from university in Damascus and went to visit my family in Aleppo.

The National reported on a bootlegger who tried to bribe an officer with a Dh50,000 monthly salary in return for tips about police raids. The man was sentenced to a year in prison.
