country is under siege. cnn s matthew chance joins me now with this very important conversation at a critical moment, matthew. what did president zelenskyy say? yeah, really, really critical moment because we are now on the brink of what many people believe will be a huge russian effort to bombard the capital city of ukraine here in kyiv and a real concerted attempt to seize control of it. volodymyr zelenskyy, the ukrainian president, has emerged as the real wartime leader of this country. and it s very difficult to get access to him because, you know, obviously he s in a secret location, in the center of kyiv. i m allowed to say that. but we had to meet heavily armed ukrainian troops at a certain location and took us by their vehicle into the basement of a building somewhere in the city center. we had to walk through these very dark corridors. all of those lined with sandbags, with security forces everywhere until we were deep in
to wait for this long, especially under these sorts of conditions. they really feel as if they re being marginalized, they re angry, understandably, but also, right now because of the freezing temperatures, they are very worried about their own health and safety. like i said, kate, we ve been watching people becoming completely delirious due to the cold. arwa, thank you so much for being there. thank you for bringing us their stories. this is just one part of the border with ukraine that what arwa is seeing in this one place, imagine all throughout the country. joining me now for more on this, the poelpolish side of ukraine. michael, one of the aid groups on the ground helping some of the thousands of people that are streaming in from ukraine. thank you for jumping on with me. what are the stories you have been hearing from people coming across the border?
in kyiv targeting government buildings and warning ukraine civilians to get out of the way. just hit a massive tv tower in kyiv knocking out broadcasts to the ukrainian people. and the russian warning now, all the more terrifying after this. russian rocket destroying a government building in ukraine s second largest city, kharkiv. at least ten people killed in that attack. dozens more hurt. joining me now for important perspective on this, national security analyst david sanger, correspondent with the new york t times and mark, brigadier general. the warning that strikes coming on the security agency buildings in kyiv and now we see this strike on a tv tower, what does it say to you? well, what it tells me is that short of some sort of diplomatic breakthrough that the
stations off the air because somehow that was dangerous to russia and we heard that from russia s top diplomat today, sergey lavrov speaking by video l link to the diplomats who literally got out of the chairs when he was speaking. doubling down in diatribe i don t think we ve heard before and when we hear sergey lavrov, the russian foreign minister speak in this way, he s channelling president putin. there s no one else to channel. what he was saying, again, he was laying the blame on ukraine for being a threat to russia. he was laying the blame on europe and nato and the united states for putting ukraine up to this, for being a danger and a threat to russia. and i don t think we should overlook just, not just that standing ovation that volodymyr zelensky, ukrainian president got from the european union parliament today, but also, there was a massive standing ovation when the president of that european union parliament
