Some paintings are worthy of pilgrimage. But for Halina Dyrschka, there are some paintings that are so extraordinary, they are journeys in themselves. In 2013, the Berlin-based filmmaker saw a series of works called
The Ten Largest, by a Swedish mystic called Hilma af Klint in a German newspaper. The images transported her so vividly, she lost the ability to describe them.
“When I saw her paintings, I thought ‘it cannot be’,” says Dyrschka, who would later visit the exhibition ....

The competition may be tough, but leaving Fred Wiseman’s “City Hall” out of the best documentary Oscar short list is unforgivable. Sorry, his 2017 honorary award doesn’t cut it.
That aside, the documentary committee acquitted itself decently, which is probably not so great an accomplishment given the bounty to choose from (238 documentaries qualified for Oscar consideration this year, breaking the previous record of 170). Those that made the cut and received nominations are: “All In: The Fight for Democracy,” “Boys State,” “Collective,” “Crip Camp,” “Dick Johnson Is Dead,” “Gunda,” “MLK/FBI,â ....

Thrills, spills and chills...

It wasn t so bad in the end, at least where cinema was concerned. Even with all those tentpole releases pushed back to next year, 2020 was so thronged with quality movie titles that narrowing down this selection of the best titles was quite a task.
With theatrical releases few and far between, we found ourselves excellently served by platforms such as Curzon, IFI@Home, and Netflix (which emerged as a feature-film market leader). When cinemas could be returned to in safety, there were still home-grown wonders and big-studio productions worth venturing out for, with the odd bloated anti-climax thrown in for good measure (Christopher Nolan s Tenet was hugely disappointing). ....

A very good year for documentaries, if an annus horribilis otherwise

While the big studios struggle under the restrictions of the pandemic, documentary films thrive. Over 140 have been released in 2020 according to Wikipedia, and with difficulty I have picked 10 favorites. They range from “City Hall,” the 45th film by Frederick Wiseman, a study of a government serving its citizens, to “Feels Good Man,” the first feature by Arthur Jones, a microcosm of how the Internet fails its users. These films are evidence that the documentary genre serves as a touchstone of truth in this era of misinformation. ....
