We have it all covered from the latest forecast to live reports from across the hurricane zone. Nbc ron mott starts us off in the thick of it in Daytona Beach, florida where mandatory evacuations have been ordered. Youve had a rough night there. Reporter it has been a rough night, andrea, good day to you. The word mandatory means Different Things to different people here. While we know a lot of people did, in fact, evacuate their homes and headed to shelters, or out of state even, a lot of people hunkered down where they were. They wanted to be near their property. We wish them well. Authorities wish them well as well. We are still expecting, were in the calm, close to the eye. There is clearing around the eye and it will pick up and get really nasty as it has been the past three hours. I want to step away and show you what were concerned about at this hour and that is the ocean.
What it has already done is devastating. The bahamas this morning as the sun comes up there, only now are they beginning to truly understand how much damage was done. Only over the last 12 to 20 hours have they been able to get out and see some of the places, towns wiped off those islands nearly completely. There is so much need and there is so much hope that today will be the day finally that more Government Resources can be brought to bear and get to the people who are in need. Friends have been helping friends. So far there have been some u. S. Coast guard rescues, but there is so much more need. Were going to check in very shortly with our Patrick Oppmann. But first i want to go to chad myers in the Weather Center. I know you were listening. We were talking to the Hurricane Hunters 35,000 feet in the air. They say they are seeing signs of a more westward path now for Hurricane Dorian. And thats exactly what the Hurricane Center had. So this is not i know it seemed like breaking new
To the country, leaving entire islands in ruins. At least seven people have been killed. Homes are gone and hospitals crippled. People need shelter. They are drenched. They are hungry. The islands Prime Minister is asking for global help. I think we would need at this point in time were concerned about security, safety and food. So we would need a lot of water and dried food. Ad whatever other assistance the International Community can give. As you know, we will have to rebuild our infrastructure. Well, as the bahamas struggled, dorian is rolling on. The hurricane has gotten weaker over the past 24 hours but its not weak. It is now a category 2, picking up speed and size as it lashes the u. S. And cnn is covering this hurricane from both sides of the storm. Patrick oppmann has been right in the middle of the devastation in the town of freeport, bahamas. We are in the window where they are really worried about storm surge and flooding. We were out on the beach earlier and the waves are just pounding it. We are over on the intercoastal side. The Halifax River separating the beach from downtown daytodowntownDaytona Beach. 6 00 a. M. To 10 00 a. M. Is prime outer bands pounding us. Wind gusts upwards of 60 plus Miles Per Hour. The storm surge expected to be anywhere from 4 to 7 feet. This water you are looking at behind me right here, this is not normally water. This is a grassy park area and the water, you can see just the cop lights behind us thats beach road. That flooded three years ago during matthew
Emerald isle, still the norfolk, Virginia Beach areas. It only drops in intensity to about a category 2 for eastern North Carolina. Category 2 is you are going to have some damage, you are going to have some significant problems and Power Outages, too. That would potentially be thursday night into friday. Thats the new part of that forecast. For people that have interests up in new england, only cape cod and nantucket, Marthas Vineyard are in that cone, by then it would be transitioning into a noreaster storm. It does look like nova scotia will get hit with this likely with winds up to 80 to 90 Miles Per Hour. Dorian will still brush areas of the east coast. This was our american model that brings it almost on shore in eastern North Carolina and the european model looks very similar to that. The big summary, with the new update, is that dorian has weakened, but its not supposed to weaken much after this and areas of South Carolina and North Carolina especially need to prepare for the p
