Washington Chamber Hosting City Council Candidates' Forum | KCII Radio


Residents of Washington’s third ward can learn more about the two candidates running to represent them on the city council this Saturday.
The Washington Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Candidates’ Forum on Zoom with Haleigh Brockman and Illa Earnest who are running for the seat that was vacated by Brendan DeLong after being elected the fire chief. Retired Washington City Clerk Earnest Running for Ward 3 Special Election


A retired Washington city employee is seeking to return to city hall with a bid for the Ward 3 City Council election on March 2nd.
Illa Earnest, who retired as city clerk in December after working 36 years for the city, is running against Haleigh Brockman to represent the southeast quadrant of Washington in a term that ends December 2023. Earnest was born and raised in Washington and has volunteered and served on several boards including Habitat for Humanity, Lending Hands Adult Day Center, Washington Betterment Foundation, and the Chamber of Commerce tourism committee. Earnest says she wants to use her knowledge of the city to help its future development, “Obviously the new business park is going to be having some expansions. University of Iowa Professor Discusses Racism, Cultural Humility with Washington for Justice


A discussion of racism and its effects from a national to local level was held during an online event hosted by Washington For Justice Sunday.
Group officers Haleigh Brockman and Meredith Henderson spoke about their antiracism and community engagement efforts they’ve made since their formation last year, and welcomed guest speaker Professor Yolanda Spears from the University of Iowa. Spears currently teaches a social work master level course on discrimination oppression and diversity, and has presented in other forums among topics of race, social justice, and implicit bias. Spears spoke about what connections there may be between race and the U.S. capitol riots last week, and she explained how racism hurts everyone, “How does it harm our community when we are constantly holding up systems and institutions that oppress others. Washington for Justice Starting Book Talk Series Next Week


Washington and surrounding residents are invited to explore and unpack their relationship with white privilege and racism during a new book discussion series being hosted by Washington for Justice.
The organization is hosting five discussion sessions about the book, “Me & White Supremacy: Combat Racism, Change the World, and Become a Good Ancestor” by Layla F. Saad. The hour-long sessions will take place over the Zoom video conference application, scheduled for January 14th and 28th, February 11th and 25th, and March 11th. Washington for Justice Treasurer Haleigh Brockman says this event series is being led by their steering committee member Dan Henderson, and was born out of a desire from the organization to educate themselves and other community members, “We just had a very candid discussion about how we’d been trying to further educate ourselves about current issues.
