For a second year, the annual literary extravaganza that is Hay Festival is setting up its virtual marquees online to celebrate the power of words, and has now revealed the free digital programme for its 34th spring edition. Over 12 days, more than 200 acclaimed writers, global policy makers, historians, poets, pioneers and innovators will take part in this year’s Festival, launching the best new fiction and non-fiction. It will interrogate some of the biggest issues of our time, from building a better world post-pandemic to tackling the compound crises of climate change, inequality, and challenges to truth and democracy. The Festival kicks off on Wednesday, May 26 with the inaugural Opening Night Gala: a night of literary delights with a selection of short readings hosted by Natalie Haynes. ....

Stormzy’s #Merky Books has crowned Jyoti Patel the winner of its annual New Writers’ Prize. Her coming-of-age novel Six Of One, which explores what it means to be a person of colour living in the UK today, emerged as the winner over more than 2,000 other submissions – nearly double the number submitted in the previous year. Covering themes of identity, personal myths and the stories people use to manage trauma, the novel is told from the perspectives of 18-year-old Nik and his British-Indian mother Avani. Stormzy founded the imprint (Ian West/PA) Patel, 28, will receive a publishing contract with #Merky Books at Penguin Random House UK. ....

He has been walking in Leicester Square, weaving absently between street performers and tourists, when he realises his pockets have been emptied â his phone, wallet and keys are gone. First comes panic, then a bitter sense of betrayal. How could a city he knows so well suddenly turn on him, he thinks, as though he were a hapless visitor? Itâs a minor moment in a sea of troubles, but one that becomes freighted with meaning in this multigenerational novel about belonging and exile. It becomes clear, too, that Sameerâs growing disenchantment is symptomatic of deeper feelings of dislocation. ....
