Its briefing today. if you we are awaiting just the president. he s in the white house situation room. he s been getting briefed and we are told his remarks will come at 3:00 p.m. eastern. you can expect a substantive comment today. we did not get that yesterday because he was waiting for the egyptian president to speak. now that s happened and we ll hear from our own president. first we go to the state department with the latest from there. reporter: the briefing has been cancelled it was pushed back again and again, now the state department has allowed the white house to take the lead. the president was meeting with his national security staff. he will be speaking to a worldwide audience on this. not just to the american public and egyptian public. more importantly to leaders across the arab world. this event that happened in egypt is resonating across the arab world and his words cannot be understated in overstated in any way, shape or form right ....

Meeting that president mubarak was stepping down. he stepped outside the oval office to the outer oval and watched some television coverage, seeing a very different reaction inside tahrir square, jubilation on the faces of the egyptains. and now president obama will make remarks to an american audience as well as our allies in the region. megyn: there was criticism for the white house of being out of touch, because of the comments we heard from the president, the administration yesterday, anticipating that he would step down when he did not. and the question was, are we no longer in touch with the president of egypt? any reaction to that from the white house or response on the political front today? reporter: they ve been trying to walk a very fine line this whole crisis, trying to not get ahead of the events. when you heard the president s remarks yesterday in marquette, michigan, you got a sense that he thought it would be the day, ....
Plan over the next unspecified period. what did he guarantee? you called it ambiguous and it is it s more noted for what it does not say. it says the high council of the high forces confirmed mubarak stepped down it says the army salutes the president for what he has done for work in war and peace. that s hugely important. it was important for mubarak as stepped down to save face. this high military body has seen to it with that statement. they said they salute the marters who died during the demonstrations and there will be a series of reports as a followup. that s the void that needs to be filled. where it leads we don t know. megyn: meantime egypt s military ....
