The plans would see Coleg Gwent’s Nash Road campus relocated to the Newport Centre. Newport County Council has made an application to Welsh Government for £7 million of the £19.7 million estimated cost of the project. Speaking previously about the plans, the leader of the council, Cllr Jane Mudd, said: “We have an amazing opportunity to create a new leisure centre in the city centre. As a cabinet, we are very excited by the prospect of being able to provide fantastic new facilities, in an accessible location, for the citizens of Newport. “On top of that, it would mean Coleg Gwent could realise its ambition for a city centre campus to give our young people a first-class learning environment.” ....
The opening of the Learning Zone was due to take place at the beginning of this academic year, however building work was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic - with contractors working at at a reduced capacity to comply with social distancing measures. Pupils who had been due to start the autumn term at the Learning Zone instead had their in-person teaching at Coleg Gwent s Pontypool campus. In September 2020, the site was officially handed over to Coleg Gwent staff so the furniture and equipment could be fitted, and the following month, students got their first look inside the new campus. ....
