Bp has been running television ads about gulf clean-up and how taxpayers, they say won t pay a cent much that s not quite true. in fact, the company will take a multibillion-dollar tax write-off that will come out of your pocket. cnn s lisa sylvester explains how it works. bp is telling its costs of the gulf oil spill to be at least $32 billion. that s the amount the company is taking as a pretax charge to cover damages, claims and clean-up costs over the next few years. a hefty amount. but bp is also planning to offset a third of that as a tax write-off. florida senator bill nelson, firing off a letter to his colleagues on the senate finance committee says he is appalled that, quote, bp intends to shift nearly $10 billion of the cost related to the gulf oil spill to the backs of the american taxpayers. last year, bp paid $10.5 billion ....
About just how big that will be. one possible outcome he s been with the company 28 years. he could receive a single payment of as much or more of $1.5 million followed up at the age of 60 with an annual pension payment of $900,000. inevitably it is fair to assume that a golden parachute that s considered to be overly generous will be controversial for a chief executive whose company is in so much trouble. john? word is, too, phil, bob dudley, recently put in charge of the gulf clean-up, will likely replace hayward. he was once in line for the ceo job in 2007 before that was given to hayward. what else do we know about dudley? reporter: bob dudley is the one name that s continually being mentioned as the likely successor and really the only name. he s currently the managing director and he s taken on day-to-day responsibility for the clean-up operation in the gulf. he was born in new york, raised in mississippi. ....
We have heard an interview on sky news in great britain, given by the chairman of bp, saying that the ceo of bp, tony hayward, is handing over the day-to-day responsibilities with respect to the gulf clean-up, the gulf response. the ending of this oil spilling into the gulf of mexico. let s go right to christine romans. christine, an interesting development, if it is, in fact, the case. well, it s interesting for a couple reasons, because this is a company that has some 80,000 employees, when you think of of how big that is, it works in 30 different countries. tony hayward is the global chief executive, the guy who resides in london, and he has people all around the world who are in charge of the different regions. sounds like what s going to happen here is that after this initial response, this initial disaster response, there will be someone in the u.s. who will be in charge of the relief operations longer-term from here on out. and that is that is sort of ....
