Welcome, everybody, to our hearing. Both those in the room and those that arent in the room. Before we start, i think its important, again, to note whats going on all around us, and that is the acknowledgement of Racial Injustice that has gone on for far too long in our country. I certainly support those who are speaking out and making their voices heard in a peaceful manner to bring about change. While change does not always come easily, i want to remind those watching this hearing today that change is possible. In december 2018, the first step that i first introduced became law. And i worked in partnership with several republican and democrat senators. Senator durbin was the lead person for the democrats. This law is the most significant criminal Justice Reform in a generation. A lot of people didnt think it was possible but we did it by working together, in a bipartisan ....
A cold war yet i mean i think this is all actually nearing frankly end but you know Foreign Countries sort of been historically have realized and though of president ial Election Years especially candidates you know attack Foreign Countries. And try to stir things up. Especially if theyre in trouble in other ways and i think our current president having difficulty with his response to the virus and also the economy the economic ramifications of course which other countries are also experiencing but in our country. You know of course especially chop his the real action really depends on the economy going well since hes a minority president that has to get a majority the 1st time so i think youre seeing a lot of the Election Year and that things may die down you k ....
Weekend. This should be a fun class. Today, we are going to talk about the spanishamerican war. But before we get into that i want to recap a few things we did in our last class. Specifically, lets talk a little bit about the imperialism that developed in the late 19th century. Have anything you can contribute in this regard . Sure. Had we were imperialistic and we thought that going sorry. To go werereasons humanitarian. We tried to help our little Brown Brothers down there, to try and make them more american because we felt it was superior. Joseph it is really an ethnocentrism. Yeah. Joseph taylor, do you have anything to add to that . That stood one thing out the most to me was the economic aspect because the u. S. Had a lot of territorial interests in cuba and a lot of americans owned sugar plantations and they wanted to protect their citizens and investments down there. But in the u. S. , there was also overproduction, so the ....
Protection program and businesses of all sizes have started to use the tax tools that we provided for their liquidity. But in that time the critics have also done what they do best. They criticize. The need came has seized on an opportunity to perpetuate every negative story that critics can manufacture. You can imagine my surprise when democrats criticized the net operating loss carryback provisions in the cares act. Because oddly democrats previously supported the last three bills where we expanded the net operating loss carrybacks in 2002, 2005, and even in 2009 with all democrat rule. So i dont recall in any of those instances any partisan attacks from democrats about this previously bipartisan, antirecessionary policy tools. So why now . Sadly, that irresponsibility has led our democratic colleagues in the house to pass legislation that would take back important tax tools that we have provided in the cares act to the tune of 254 billion, and thats a tax increase on the american bu ....
The first lecture in this years series. This year, we are examining dissents opinions. Different aspects thereof. You have already been warned about your cell phones and your apple watches and so forth so i will not repeat that. But you will be in the doghouse if it goes off during the period of our evening. I also want to thank this evening our host, Justice Stephen breyer, who against all odds was able to come and introduce our speaker on the first day of a busy term. Justice breyer is one of the most faithful friends of the society. Whenever we have called on him to help us out, he has shown up and done a wonderful job. Him for taking time away from his busy schedule on first day of term. To impose too much on his time so i will abbreviate the introduction of Justice Breyer. Francisco. In san he received an a. B. From stanford. Aba from mod lang college, oxford and an ll. ....
