To many, Charles Dickens, Christmas, and “A Christmas Carol” have become synonymous. Evidence, however, shows that the Carol was written more for commercial reasons rather than to celebrate the season; the true roots of his love of the season can be seen in a much earlier story, one written by a much more “innocent” Dickens.
To recognize the true Dickensian love of the season, one needs to look at the Dickens before the Carol. There is where we find the Victorian author who truly loved the season and all it represented, especially the joyful aspect. Dickens, in fact, celebrated the holiday every year with exuberance, both personally and as an author.
