Peatland on fire again as burning season starts in Indonesia

Peatland on fire again as burning season starts in Indonesia
Indonesia’s annual fire season has started again, with hotspots detected in 10 provinces.
Some of the fires have been detected in protected areas with large swaths of peatland.
The government says it’s preparing to carry out cloud seeding to induce rainfall in affected areas.
However, environmentalists have called for more traditional methods of law enforcement to prevent fires breaking out in the first place.
JAKARTA Fires have flared up in at least 10 provinces in Indonesia, with some of the burning occurring in peatlands.
The burning, including in protected forests, marks the start of the country’s dry season and the attendant fires that are set to clear trees and shrubs for agriculture. Officials attribute this mainly to government policies such as moratoriums on clearing primary forests and issuing licenses for new oil palm plantations.
Environmentalists say other factors contributed, including an unusually wet year, declining palm oil prices, and an economic slump that led to a slowdown in forest-clearing activity such as plantation expansion and logging.
They’ve called on the government to keep aiming for even lower rates of deforestation, and cautioned against pursuing economic growth emulating Brazil’s deforestation-driven extractive model. ....

Grim toll from Indonesia's abandoned mines may get even worse, report warns

Grim toll from Indonesia’s abandoned mines may get even worse, report warns
The proliferation of abandoned mining pits throughout Indonesia has led to the deaths of 168 people, mostly children, from 2014-2020, according to a new report.
Mining companies are required to fill in and rehabilitate their mining sites after their operations end, but many fail to do so, allowing the pits to fill with rainwater and become a drowning hazard.
There has also been little to no law enforcement against companies that fail to rehabilitate their mining pits, leaving the families of those killed without any recourse to justice, activists say. ....
