Rain, hail or shine, Whitsunday Volunteer Marine Rescue crews are on call to lend a hand to boaties in need around the clock.
And 2020 was no exception with a record-breaking year for the 35-member strong squadron.
In the year to December 28, VMR Whitsunday was called to 162 marine incidents and helped more than 500 people.
This was an increase in activations of almost 30 per cent from 2019.
VMR Whitsunday president Mal Priday said the record-breaking year could have been a result of COVID travel restrictions.
“I think people are checking out their own backyard now because they can’t go overseas,” he said. ....
