“Aspire to inspire before you expire” is an adage that continues to resonate in my mind almost two decades after I first heard it in the studio of my undergraduate voice teacher and life changing mentor, Dr. Gregory Broughton, at the University of Georgia.
It is a phrase that when spoken literally, to a singer, certainly possesses a valuable didactic meaning, since “breath” is the absolute foundation of song. Alternatively, when its significance is viewed in broader terms, it could apply to almost every decision one makes in his or her daily life. Considering all of the challenges that we faced in 2020 up to the present moment, “aspire to inspire before you expire” has acquired new meaning, with greater urgency, reminding us that life is incredibly fragile and it can, and often does, in an instant, change unexpectedly. ....

Acceptance in the arts

The night of Black Theatrical Ensembleâs first performance on March 8, 1976, in the University of Georgia Chapel, founder Larry Calhoun and other members of the organization gathered in a circle to pray.
âWe knew what it meant to us â but we prayed that what we had to present would mean something to our fellow students on campus,â Calhoun said.
Calhoun decided to form BTE when he was a graduate student at UGA in 1976. Six years before Calhoun founded BTE, Nawanna Lewis Miller founded the Pamoja groups: the Pamoja Singers, Pamoja Dancers and Pamoja Drama and Arts.
Although UGA had been desegregated for nine and 15 years, respectively, when Lewis Miller and Calhoun formed their organizations, Black students had few opportunities to express themselves and find community on campus.
