Greece s interior minister on Monday more-or-less surprised the opposition by tabling a draft amendment, composed of a single article, essentially lifting all restrictions on a process for Greek citizens abroad to vote from their place of residence.
Interior Minister Makis Voridis made the statement while appearing on a morning television current affairs program, while even pointing to a similar position expressed by a main opposition SYRIZA MP who holds the expatriate Greeks shadow portfolio.
Although he promised most restrictions would be lifted, if the draft amendment is ratified by Parliament, Voridis added that certain conditions will remain, such as a would-be voter abroad still being registered on voters rolls, a verified presence in Greece over the past 35 years and a tax statement filed in the ....

A funeral service will be held on Monday for nonagenarian shipowner and philanthropist Iakovos Tsounis, who was honored widely in his native Greece over the recent period for gifting his entire fortune to the country s armed forces.
Tsounis, who will be interred in an Athens cemetery, will receive a military funeral and honors bestowed to an active major general.

Greece continues to figure in the lowest spots in the developed world in terms of attracting clinical studies, participants at a panel discussion organized by the Council of Competitiveness of Greece heard on Tuesday.
The advocacy organization (compete.gr) was founded nearly two years ago by a coterie of the country s biggest companies and business partners to promote policies that boost competitiveness in all fields.
According to figures presented at the online discussion, Greece s participation in global clinical studies ranks a paltry 0.67 percent, whereas reaching 1 percent translates into 10,000 patients receiving the latest innovative therapies. ....

Greece s relevant labor and social security ministry this week announced that the state will allocate a 534-euro monthly stipend, separately for the months January and February 2021, to the vendors selling the street magazine Sxedia (pronounced schedia ), most of whom were once homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
According to the relevant minister, a joint ministerial decision will be published this week in the government gazette. Minister Costis Hatzidakis met on Monday with a delegation of the newspaper sellers and representatives of the NGO Diogenes, which publishes the periodical. ....

The EU has approved of a program by the Greek government to funnel 60 million euros towards the support of SMEs severely affected by the ongoing pandemic.
The sum was approved as part of the framework for state support. Eligible SMEs must be registered in the Elevate Greece start-up registrar, and have commenced business activity by at least Dec. 31, 2020. The specific business activity must also be compliant with Greece s Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation (RIS3) program.
Nevertheless, the support plan is open to all sectors of business, excluding finance, farm production and aquaculture. ....
