Relay for Life fundraiser aims to give people second chance at a prom

GARDNER When Rhonda Rushford, an event chairperson for the annual Greater Gardner Relay for Life, began organizing a fundraiser based on the idea of giving adults who were unable to go to their high school prom a second chance at attending, she had no idea a global pandemic would soon mean the cancellation of formal school events across the country.
“We thought it would be a perfect way for many people that never got to go to their own proms to be able to attend one now,” said Rushford, who said the idea for the fundraiser came from her daughter, Amanda Foresman, more than two years ago. “There are always high school students battling cancer that were too sick to attend their proms, (so) what an experience to have a second chance. Never in a million years did we anticipate the world would come to a screeching halt (and) high school students were not able to have their proms during this pandemic.” ....

Organizers prepare for another mostly virtual Relay for Life this year
Group has already raised $10,000 in fight against cancer
GARDNER It will be a “reimagined” Relay for Life this year.
The annual 24-hour fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, during which teams walk the track at Mount Wachusett Community College each June, was canceled and held virtually last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and organizers said this year’s event will follow along the same lines due to public health restrictions on large gatherings.
But members of the Relay planning committee said they are creating new ways for residents to participate in the popular event aimed at celebrating local survivors and caregivers touched by cancer. ....
