The Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning announced on Monday that it has set out to establish sustainable ‘Greater Cities’ or future cities in Salalah, Nizwa, Sohar and Muscat.
When major cities are occupying the top positions in the settlement hierarchy based on their population and set criteria, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning (MHUP) is introducing another concept branded as ‘Greater Cities’ considering the important functional roles that economic gateways and national centres will play as major engines of growth in determining the status of the cities in the future.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning (MHUP) has formed an executive committee with personnel from relevant authorities to implement an urban strategy for different governorates. The committee has started work to prepare structural plans for Greater Muscat, Greater Salalah, Greater Nizwa and Greater Sohar, in addition to accelerating development in the wilayat of Jabal Akhdar and establishing a control centre to follow up the implementation of projects.
