这项重大的创作任务是命题创作，要求以长城为主题，各绘画艺术门类艺术家们都十分重视，清华大学美术学院一共出了三十多个方案，经过反复评选后，程向军的方案脱颖而出。得知初稿入围，程向军心情非常激动，“中国漆画终于有机会在殿堂级的空间里展现它的魅力，我作为长期从事漆画创作的艺术家，有责任和义务完成好这项艰巨的创作任务。” 为了更好地进行创作，程向军多次前往长城实地考察，但在考察后，他却放弃了描绘景区管委会推荐的长城著名景点，“因为这些景点非常出名，观众容易产生审美疲劳，而我们要塑造的是非写实的长城，也就是表现出心中的长城。”在一次又一次地考察后，他将长城不同角度的美铭记在心里，笔下的创作不再拘泥于某一个固定画面。从最初方案到最后完成，《长城颂》画稿经历了20余次修改�
