The event began with a powerful earthquake off the northeastern coast of Honshu, Japan’s main island, which caused widespread damage on land and initiated a series of large tsunami waves that devastated many coastal areas of the country, most notably in the Tōhoku region (northeastern Honshu). News report: Japan is being shaken, smashed and scorched, the dawn light revealing the obliteration wrought by the country s worst earthquake. In Miyagi prefecture north of Tokyo, whole villages and towns have been shattered and swept away. Just north of the quake s epicentre, landslides ripped railway lines from their tracks. To the south, trains were tossed off course and upended. Hundreds of people are dead and missing. Near Sendai in northern Japan, the tsunami surged ten kilometres inland. Houses were either torn from their foundations or torn apart. Boats were picked up and thrust along roads. Cars were tossed about like bath toys.
