Lord Derby denies that Irish visit was a British government peace mission

Liverpool, 27 April 1921 – Speculation surrounds former cabinet member Lord Derby’s recent visit to Ireland.
Lord Derby has claimed that the newspapers have exaggerated the importance of his trip and has rejected reports that he was on a peace mission to Ireland or that he was sent by the government. ‘A mountain has been made out of a molehill, and I propose now to reduce the mountain to its proper proportions as a molehill.’
Responding to allegations that he had travelled incognito – that he had worn spectacles and had used a different name – he insisted that his actions were easily explained. The glasses were necessary, he pointed out, on account of his advancing years and without them he was unable to read. As for the different name, he explained: ‘I knew that if I had gone in my own name I could never have been free from the ubiquitous reporter and I wanted to go and ....

Chicago, 26 April 1921 – The American Association for the Recognition of the Irish Republic, which met in Chicago last week, received a message of encouragement from Sinn Féin President Éamon de Valera: ‘Sincerest greetings to you all. Democratic, open, honest, direct – your organisation will not fail.’
De Valera, in a telegram addressed to the chairman of the convention, claimed that the ‘instinct for fair-play alone will not let Americans side with a grasping empire against a people fighting solely for liberty and daily offering up their lives in testimony.’ ....

9780717111114: James Connolly (Irish Lives) - AbeBooks - Edwards, Ruth Dudley: 0717111113

James Connolly (1868-1916), the son of Irish immigrants, was born in Edinburgh. He came to Ireland in 1896 as paid organiser of the Dublin Socialist Club and founded The Workers Republic, Ireland s first socialist newspaper. In 1911 he was appointed Belfast organiser of the Irish Transport and General Workers Union. With James Larkin, he led the workers of Dublin during the Great Lockout of 1913 and when Larkin went to the USA the following year, Connolly assumed leadership of the union. His tiny Irish Citizen Army took part in the 1916 Rising, following which he was executed. This short book has established itself as one of the very best surveys of Connolly s life since it first appeared in the early 1980s. Its reappearance will be welcomed by all who remain fascinated by Connolly s life, especially its dialogue between socialism and nationalism. ....

London, 22 March 1921 - Austen Chamberlain has been unanimously elected as the new leader of the Conservative Party in the House of Commons.
The election, which took place yesterday in the Carlton Club in London, was precipitated by the surprise resignation of party leader Andrew Bonar Law owing to ill-health. His departure has left a vacancy in the coalition government in which he was a senior figure.
News of Bonar Law’s retirement was delivered to the House of Commons on 17 March by the Prime Minister David Lloyd George. In his resignation letter, Mr Bonar Law referred to the strain of the last few years and the difficulty he has had in doing his work. He admitted that he was ‘quite worn out’ and that the advice from his medical team was that unless he took an immediate and long rest, ‘an early and complete breakdown’ would be ‘inevitable’. ....
