Coronavirus USA: Many jobless Americans will lose benefits unless Trump signs relief bill

US President Donald Trump has signed the massive US$2.3 trillion (A$3 trillion) coronavirus relief and government funding bill into law, averting a government shutdown that was set to begin tomorrow, and extending billions of dollars in coronavirus aid to millions.
Aides had prepared for the president to sign the bill as early as Christmas Eve, when it arrived at Mar-a-Lago for his signature. But the plan was scrapped at the last minute, two sources with knowledge of the circumstances told CNN.
As a result, critical benefits had lapsed for millions of jobless Americans on Saturday evening.

When Riggs checked into the hospital, a morgue trailer big enough to stack 24 bodies had just arrived out back. A medical field tent sprung up in the parking lot while doctors moved the 67-year-old college professor to a ventilator. Katie Riggs Maxwell begins to cry as she hugs a portrait of her father Mark Riggs while posing for a photo on Dec. 16, 2020, on the campus of Abilene Christian University in Abilene. Mark Riggs, who was a professor at the school, passed away last Monday of COVID-19.
In the weeks that Mark Riggs went from feeling worn down before Thanksgiving to dying of COVID-19 last Monday, only six calls about people not wearing face coverings rolled into the Abilene Police Department.
