What do you get when you have a ballet dancer who dreams of making it professionally and showing the world that guys can dance too? You have a real-life Billy Elliot story, which is happening to someone who played the titular role of Billy on the West End back home in the UK, and is now here in the US studying and training in professional ballet making his dancing dreams a reality! Not only does he dance, but he has done a few acting roles as well and even participated in a professional opera as a dancer. He is taking the role, and making it his real-life story! At the end of the musical, we see Billy leaving his home and family to head off for training at the Royal Ballet School, so this is like getting to see the story continue beyond the stage! March 8, 2021 MACOMB, IL - In honor of Black History Month in February, Penelope Shumate, director of the Western Illinois University (WIU) School of Music Opera Theatre, hosted international opera singer tenor Chauncey Packer, via Zoom. The WIU opera workshop students that attended Packer s discussion gained insight into his professional career. In addition, Millikin University s opera workshop class joined to visit with the exciting American tenor, originally from Alabama. Packer made his debut with the Metropolitan Opera in New York in the roles of Robbins and Crabman and the cover of Sportin Life, in the 2020 opera Porgy and Bess. The opera was composed by Gershwin and first performed in 1935. It features an African-American cast and has remained one of the most frequently performed and well-known American operas worldwide. ....
