and let s be clear about the whole kbrj proceeding, it was somewhat unusual. generally a prosecutor will present selected information to a grand jury and have them make a decision predicated on that. this district attorney through his associates presented everything, whether it contradicted or it didn t contradict. but the issue i have, is that it s a matter of trust, we want to trust investigations, we want to trust grand jury decisions, we want to trust the ultimate outcome, we want the jury to buy into it so know that it s just, it s proper and it s fair. if there s something that we haven t been shown, what else is out there that hasn t been shown. it calls for something that i ve been talking about a long time. and that is to have independent prosecutors do these things. how can you have a local prosecutor in a community
it s a decision that drastically diverges from a narrative of grand jury decisions in ferguson and staten island. after michael brown died prosecutor bob mccullough chose not to bring charges against darren wilson. instead he left the decision up to a grand jury. in november the grand jury chose not to indict wilson. after eric garner died they did not charge the officers who placed him in a choke hold. they left that decision in the hands of a grand jury. that grand jury did not invite. police officers rarely face criminal charges for on-duty shootings. only 41 officers were charged with murder or manslaughter for on-duty shootings over a seven year period ending in 2011. by contrast the fbi reported 2,718 justifiable homicides by law enforcement during that same seven-year span. what s different about the
