The President’s Commission on Carbon Neutrality at the University of Michigan has submitted its final report, which contains recommendations to help the university achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. The report includes 50 recommendations that U-M could take to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions across the Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint campuses. Recommendations account for U-M’s: Scope 1 emissions, resulting from on-campus sources like the central power plant; Scope 2 emissions, resulting from purchased electricity; and Scope 3 emissions, resulting from indirect sources like commuting, food procurement and university-sponsored travel. The report outlines a pathway for U-M to: Reach carbon neutrality for Scope 1 emissions across all three campuses by 2025 (inclusive of carbon offsets) and eliminate Scope 1 emissions entirely by 2040. ....
The Detroit River Story Lab was one of seven University of Michigan projects to receive funding from the Graham Sustainability Institute’s Carbon Neutrality Acceleration Program. Each project has dramatic potential to help reduce net carbon emissions. “I congratulate the U-M researchers of the CNAP teams whose exciting projects apply multidisciplinary problem-solving to the challenge of climate change,” said President Mark Schlissel. “The CNAP program is a tremendous example of what we can contribute as a comprehensive public research university, with the generosity of our donors supporting efforts that have enormous potential to help address an urgent societal problem.” In this funding round, seven 1-2 year projects totaling $1.75 million were chosen from among 37 proposed projects involving 105 U-M faculty and researchers. The gift supplements the company’s $13 million in donations to fund the Dow Fellows Program since its inception in 2013 and secures funding through 2023. The program offers a graduate-level interdisciplinary training and sustainability project experience to students across the university. Since the inception of the program, more than 400 students from 17 of the 19 schools and colleges on the Ann Arbor campus have served as fellows, and an additional 500 scholars have been supported through the program. Dow Fellows undertake research on sustainability topics that affect an aspect of real world challenges. ....
