Finn Allen got the Wellington Firebirds off to a fast start and Troy Johnson guided them home as they began their Twenty20 Super Smash title defence in style with a win over the Auckland Aces on Thursday. Allen blasted 53 off 24 balls at the top of the order while Johnson was not out on 50 off 43 balls as they chased down their target of 177 with five balls to spare and four wickets in hand at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. They entered the final five overs of their innings needing 46 off 30 balls – an asking rate of more than nine runs per over – but quickly got things under control, as Jamie Gibson blasted a pair of straight sixes off the bowling of Rob O’Donnell. ....
