Like a recurring dream or nightmare, depending on your views, the discussion of a balanced school calendar at Lexington City Schools has returned.
During its recent meeting, members of the Lexington City Schools voted to look into the possibility of a non-traditional or balanced school calendar, possibly starting as early as next school year.

As the number of COVID-19 cases continues to increase school systems in the area are struggling to balance the need to return students to the classroom with protecting them and their staff from exposure to the virus.
While several school districts have already resumed in-person learning under an altered schedule, other districts have chosen to remain fully remote until the end of the third nine-weeks in March.
Lexington City Schools
Lexington City School students will not be returning to in-person learning on Jan. 17 as originally planned.
Members of the Lexington City Schools Board of Education voted during their meeting on Tuesday night to remain in Option C, all remote learning until the end of the first semester in March. ....

On a Friday afternoon in March, North Carolina public schools were told they could no longer allow students back into the classroom due to the outbreak of COVID-19, leaving educators and administrators scrambling to provide an alternative education platform.
Due to restrictions on social distancing, remote or online learning became the logical alternative for many schools. But as the new school year began in August, it became apparent that this new platform was having a negative impact on student’s grades.
All three school districts in Davidson County reported a marked increase in students who are failing in at least one course in the first nine-weeks and most attribute this to difficulty in engaging students during remote learning. ....
