When 28-year-old Gracyn Doctor thinks about her aunt, Bethane Middleton-Brown, a smile quickly spreads across her face.
She s always been my favorite aunt, just my favorite person, Gracyn said. Her and my mom were super close. She was so smart. I feel like she really kind of stepped into the role almost that my mom was a little bit.
Gracyn Doctor is a reporter for WFAE. She remembers one day when she ran out of batteries for her recorder which is a very real source of anxiety for a radio journalist on a deadline. Panicked, she called her aunt. ....

North Carolina's Child Care Industry Still Reeling From COVID Setbacks

The child care industry lost more than 370,000 jobs in 2020. One-in-6 jobs still haven’t returned, causing a shortage of child care providers.
Like many industries, the pandemic has shined a light on the issues haunting the child care industry. The National Women’s Law Center reported a loss of more than 370,000 jobs in the industry in 2020, a third of the child care workforce.
“Enrollment has started to rise,” said Sharon Pitts, the director of the Little Hedgepeth Academy in north Charlotte. “Therefore, there has been more need for workers and staff. We have seen less applicants applying and sending in resumes.” ....

Local Couple Launches The Hope Tank To 'Give Hope Daily'

The Hope Tank is a mobile hygiene service vehicle, created by Adrienne and Emmanuel Threatt of Hope Vibes.
A YouTube video changed Adrienne Threatt’s life.
“A homeless woman was sharing about dealing with her menstrual cycle while living on the streets,” Threatt said. “And she would have to often decide whether she was going to use her limited resources to buy food that week or feminine hygiene products.”
Threatt was moved. She shared the video with friends and her husband, Emmanuel. Soon, she was moved to action with the help of Emmanuel and volunteers. They passed out feminine hygiene products to homeless women in Charlotte. ....

The biggest news of the week, of course, was that after just a five-day trial, the Senate voted Saturday to acquit former President Trump in his impeachment. It was what most people expected, but was it right? One of the biggest surprises was that Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina was one of seven Republicans to submit a guilty vote. Was it fair for him to vote Trump was guilty of inciting an insurrection after voting that it wasn t constitutional to impeach the former president in the first place? ....
